The grooved portion of the >> separator.
Ball mill
The mill operation is based on the well-known Shimadzu process. Lead is fed into the rotating drum in the form of small cylinders or ingots. The lead oxide,
produced by abrasion between the lead cylinders or ingots in a stream of air is removed and transported to the baghouse by the same air flow. The aspiration
system is designed to take out only those particles within the usable size range. Coarser particles remain in the drum until further oxidation allows them to pass
out of the system. The oxidation level of the lead can be adjusted by varying the temperature and the air flow.
Barium sulphate
An inorganic additive (>> addition agent) for negative lead masses (BaSO4).
Barton reactor
>> Barton oxide.
Battery
One or more galvanic (electrochemical) cells electrically coupled into a single unit and equipped with attachments for external electrical connections.
Battery assembly line
Term for all the machines in the assembly area:
>> Enveloping or stacking machine,
>> Cast-on-Strap machine,
>> short circuit tester,
>> connector welding machine,
>> cover placing machine,
>> heat sealing machine,
>> post finishing station,
>> air leakage tester,
>> stacking robot
Battery case
Battery box containing the plate blocks, the connectors and the electrolyte.
Battery charger
Unit supplying electrical energy to a secondary battery.
Battery test
This term describes the test for determining the charging condition and electrolyte level of lead batteries with liquid electrolyte. The charging condition is determined
by measuring of the >> acid density.
Battery washing machine
The battery cases get in contact with acid during the formation process. The washing machine cleans and dries the batteries. It is part of the >> finishing line
Battery, automotive
An accumulator which has been designed specifically for starting combustion engines.
Battery, filled and charged
Ready to use, charged lead battery, filled with electrolyte.
Battery, maintenance-free
Battery that need not be refilled with water under normal circumstances. This term is often used for closed VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries
(electrolyte fixed by gel/glass mat) but also for maintenance free starter batteries produced after DIN standards.
Battery, rechargeable
>> Secondary battery.
Battery, traction
An accumulator designed for driving industrial electric vehicles.
Battery, unfilled an charged
Dry pre-charged lead battery which is activated by filling it with >> sulphuric acid of density = 1,28 g/cm³.
Bid milling-off machine
A machine for automatic removing the welding seam between the container and the lid of an tractionary cell.
Boost charge
A charge applied to a battery which is already near a state of full charge, usually of short duration.
Brushing
A method used to remove surplus paste from frames, lugs and the supports of a pasted plate.
Buffer battery
An accumulator connected to a direct current source in order to reduce the voltage and current strength fluctuations.
Buffer charging
Charging method for emergency power batteries which uses a very small amount of charging current. The emergency power battery is continuously charged to compensate for possible losses in capacity. The battery is charged to 100% during the entire period of operation.
